John Muir said, “The mountains are calling and I must go!” We live by this motto. To us it means, “Hello World!”
Welcome to U-Turns with Yukon and Bean. I’m Angie Mattson Stegall (and my nickname is Bean – from the movie Rango). Nelson Stegall is my numero uno travel partner and my love. He’s called Yukon because of the giant red beard he grows each winter. When he puts on a red ski cap, he looks EXACTLY like the lumberjack Yukon Cornelius from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. See?
Nelson and I met on the dating site PlentyofFish.com in 2011. It was an instant connection and we’ve been blissfully pursuing our travel adventures together ever since.
I’ve camped and hiked a lot in my life, but I’ll never be known as an extreme outdoors girl. I was built for comfort, not for speed! I love flatwater/sea kayaking and helped start the Mecklenburg Regional Paddlers (MRP) kayaking club in early 2000. I spend a lot of time kayaking lakes in NC, SC, and Virginia and have paddled the clear the springs of Florida extensively. I’ve traveled to many of the national parks and have visited Alaska, Greece, and significant amount of my favorite state, California.
Nelson has been quite a bit more adventurous in his life – he started trad climbing in his early teens, is an Eagle Scout, a NOLS grad, and has visited all 50 states. He lived in Alaska for five years and backpacked extensively near his home in Palmer, AK. He was a raft guide on the Gauley and New Rivers for years, earned his forestry degree and ran timber in Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee.
We started this whole adventure as a Facebook page and wanted to grow it into a blog. Our goal is to share our adventures (past, present, and future) and inspire you venture out more, too. Hello World!
